REVIEW – “Keeping The Human Aspect Alive In Learning Japanese”
Human Japanese Lite is essentially a textbook that users can flip through. It is definitely not a typical textbook, however! The text reads in a warm and friendly way, everything is casual and straight to the point. Reading and flipping through the pages of Human Japanese is the basic function of this app. Any words or sounds that the book presents can be tapped to play an audio of the word or sound. Unlike many language programs, Human Japanese does not simply provide phrases and words to be memorized. Instead, it explains the foundation and inner workings of the Japanese language, taking time to compare it with English. Users will learn helpful words and phrases, but the app is designed to do more than encourage memorization.
The content of Human Japanese Lite is not only focused on the language. Chapters discuss Japanese culture as well in order to help form a well-rounded student, so users learn about the Japanese culture surrounding items found in the home as they learn how to pronounce and use words describing things found in the home. Human Japanese even explains the history of the words when useful or entertaining.
Aside from reading the chapters and listening to words and sounds, users can take quizzes and access a dictionary of Japanese words. The dictionary only contains words or grammar terms that appear in the main text of Human Japanese. I searched for several common words including “welcome”, “hello” and “book” and returned no results. When I searched for “noun” the dictionary gave me a definition in English of the word. So, even though the app claims to feature a dictionary of all Japanese words that appear in the text, this isn’t the truth.
Navigating Human Japanese Lite is straight forward as pages can be scrolled top to bottom and flipped through using arrows at the bottom of the screen. The main menu can be accessed from every page. The most useful item on the main menu is the ability to select any chapter from the book. The Lite version of Human Japanese only features the first eight chapters, users must buy Human Japanese full version to access all 40 chapters.
Human Japanese Lite is a good app for the aspiring student of Japanese, more so than the curious person looking to add a few Japan
1000
ese phrases to their repertoire. The app is welcoming and informational, not dull and based on rote memorization. Human Japanese Lite definitely keeps the “human” in learning Japanese.
